Our guest at the Eucharistic Congress
This is one of my very favourite photos of all time! I was a military chaplain in 1998 when the Military Diocese of Canada brought Jean to Quebec City as our guest at the Eucharistic Congress. All of the Chaplains along with Bishop Don Théreault joined Jean for dinner at the Citadel. As the senior serving Catholic chaplain I had the honour of sitting beside Jean. In this photo, I was telling Jean about my nephew’s life and my participation in his funeral a few weeks earlier. My nephew, Louis, lived to 28 years and he lived his life bringing tremendous joy to his family and all who knew him. Louis was a very special person, and at one time family wondered if L’Arche would be a place for him to live. Instead, his parents made all of the adjustments so that Louis could remain at home. There were no regrets. The story brought tears to Jean’s eyes but a beautiful smile to his face!
