Holes in his jacket
This is a photo of Jean Vanier with L’Arche Arnprior’s founding core member, Ian Squires, taken in July 1985 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary, just in front of the Big House on the farm in Harlowe. Ian chose the place for this photo to be taken. He remembers than Jean had holes in his jacket on that visit. Ian says that he has a few pairs of socks like that, himself! Ian gave this photo to the office to be framed and hung there so that everyone who visited would be able to see it.
Ian was invited to Rideau Hall, the Governor General’s residence, on the occasion of Jean being invested as a Companion of the Order of Canada in June of 1989. When Jean was in Ottawa, he would speak at one of the churches, and Jane Tingley, Ian’s sister, remembers going with Ian to hear Jean both at St. Basil’s Church and Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. Ian has co-written several booklets about his life experiences. His first was completed in 1995, and he remembers presenting Jean with a copy of one of his books after such a talk. This probably happened on the occasion when he was invited to a dinner with Jean Vanier and the Archbishop of Ottawa in 1998. It is likely that this was in November, as Jean was in Canada to record the Massey Lectures for Canadian Broadcasting Corporation at that time.
Ian would like Jean to know that he will be 72 on May 9th of this year, 2018, and that he was the founding member of L’Arche Frontenac in 1975. He also wishes to remind Jean that Ian’s mom, Mrs. Muriel Squires, will be 102 this year on July 23rd. She is the only one of 5 siblings still living.
