L’Arche takes seriously our mission to shape a more human society and believes that investing in the leadership skills of our Assistants helps both those who choose a career at L’Arche and those who go on to other opportunities after their time at L’Arche.
During the first few months at L’Arche, we focus on the development of practical skills for the support of Core Members (persons with intellectual disabilities) and the running of the house. These include: skills in providing personal care support; administration of medication; accompaniment to medical appointments; and preparing meals.
After the basic skills are acquired, L’Arche provides support and training for Assistants to develop a broader set of skills related to leadership and self-awareness. These include:
- Interpersonal, communication, and relationship skills
- The ability to work effectively in a team setting
- Collaborative leadership skills
- Problem solving skills
- Mindsets to support growth and learning--your own and for others around you
