La première communauté de L'Arche au Canada, L'Arche Daybreak, est née à Richmond Hill en banlieue de Toronto en 1969. L'Arche Le Printemps, située à Saint-Malachie enBeauce, fut la première communauté à voir le jour au Québec.

Au Canada, L'Arche offre aujourd'hui plus de 200 lieux de vie et de travail à des personnes vivant avec une déficience intellectuelle. Les 29 communautés de L'Arche au pays s'étendent du Cap Breton jusqu'à l'île de Vancouver. Huit de ces communautés sont localisées au Québec.

Depuis sa fondation, L'Arche apporte une vision unique en matière de soins et de vie communautaire. Elle favorise l'inclusion, l'accueil, l'appartenance à la collectivité et elle valorise la contribution des personnes qui ont une déficience intellectuelle.


Chaque communauté de L'Arche:

  • comprend de 2 à 8 foyers, auxquels s'ajoutent des ateliers de travail et des centres de jour qui s'intègrent au voisinage local
  •  possède un vaste réseau d'amis et de bénévoles impliqués dans la vie communautaire
  • est approuvée par le Ministère des services sociaux provincial
  • est enregistrée dans sa province comme un organisme à but non-lucratif qui possède son propre conseil d'administration
  • offre un support aux parents de personnes ayant une déficience intellectuelle
  • est membre de La Fédération internationale de L'Arche, qui comprend 130 communautés membres, réparties dans 30 pays, sur 5 continents
