Encountering 'the Other'
Jean Vanier
"When we encounter we come to know. When we come to know we are able to understand. When we understand, healing and peace can really grow."— from the Introduction
(Softcover; Paulist Press, 2005; Pp62) The reflections in this book come from Jean Vanier’s talks at a conference in Derry-Londonderry in June 2004 entitled Encountering ‘the Other’. This conference enabled people from many religious backgrounds and nationalities to come together and encounter difference and explore and celebrate that difference. The conference revealed that when we encounter we come to know. When we come to know we are able to understand. When we understand, healing and peace can really grow. This book is offered to the reader as a lasting fruit of the conference and as an encouragement and inspiration to encounter the other and so be peacemakers. The seven chapters, transcribed in a style faithful to Vanier’s spoken words, include Daring to Trust and to Let Go of Power, Disability and Inequality, Overcoming Our Fear, Listening and Communication, Peace, Celebrating Difference, and Reconciliation and Change.
